Britse historicus Keith Lowe over WW2, the Liberation Route en de actualiteit

In de nasleep van de Tweede Wereldoorlog ontstond een nieuwe reeks mythen en overtuigingen die de wereld sindsdien in stand hebben gehouden: de mythe van de held, de mythe van ‘broederschap en eenheid’, de mythe van de oorlog als een existentiële strijd tussen goed en kwaad. Dergelijke ideeën gaven naoorlogse leiders het vertrouwen om een nieuwe wereldorde te creëren op basis van internationale samenwerking. 

Maar nu de generaties die de Tweede Wereldoorlog hebben meegemaakt langzaam verdwijnen, begint ook ons geloofssysteem af te brokkelen. In deze lezing schetst Keith Lowe de belangrijkste mythen die de naoorlogse wereld hebben gevormd – en de gevolgen van hun ondergang vandaag de dag. De behoefte aan een nieuwe mythe om Europa en het Westen te verenigen is nog nooit zo urgent geweest.

Deze lezing van Keith Lowe in de openbare bibliotheek maakt deel uit van het programma rond de tentoonstelling Art of Remembrance, die op 10 maart opent in het Huis van de Nijmeegse Geschiedenis. De tentoonstelling brengt internationale kunstenaars samen die een residentie hebben gevolgd op herdenkingslocaties van de Tweede Wereldoorlog in heel Europa, waar ze zich hebben verdiept in archieven, landschappen en lokale gemeenschappen om na te denken over herinneringen als iets kwetsbaars en voortdurends.

Na de lezing volgt een bezoek aan de tentoonstelling in het naastgelegen Huis van de Nijmeegse Geschiedenis, waarvoor alle deelnemers van harte zijn uitgenodigd.

Over Keith Lowe Keith Lowe is een Britse auteur en historicus, gespecialiseerd in de geschiedenis en herinneringen aan de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Hij is lid van de Royal Historical Society en zit in de historische adviesraad van Liberation Route Europe. Zijn boeken zijn in meer dan twintig talen vertaald. Tot zijn werk behoren de internationale bestseller Savage Continent: Europe in the Aftermath of World War II en, recentelijk, Naples 1944; War, Liberation and Chaos. Hij geeft regelmatig lezingen aan universiteiten en andere instellingen aan beide zijden van de Atlantische Oceaan.

In the aftermath of the Second World War, a new set of myths and beliefs were born that have sustained the world ever since: the myth of the hero, the myth of “brotherhood and unity”, the myth of the war as an existential struggle between good and evil. Such ideas gave postwar leaders the confidence to create a new world order based on international cooperation. But as the generations who lived through the Second World War have begun to slip away, our belief system has also begun to crumble. In this lecture, Keith Lowe will outline the major myths that created the postwar world – and the consequences of their downfall today. The need for a new myth to unite Europe and the West has never been more urgent.

This lecture by Keith Lowe at the public library is part of the programme organised around the Art of Remembrance exhibition, opening on 10 March at the House of Nijmegen History; the exhibition brings together international artists who undertook residencies at World War II remembrance sites across Europe, engaging with archives, landscapes and local communities to reflect on memory as fragile and ongoing.

The lecture will be followed by a visit to the exhibition in the adjacent House of Nijmegen History, to which all participants are warmly invited.

About Keith Lowe Keith Lowe is a British author and historian, who specialises in the history and memory of the Second World War. He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, and on the historical advisory board of Liberation Route Europe. His books have been translated into more than twenty languages. They include the international bestseller Savage Continent: Europe in the Aftermath of World War II, and, most recently, Naples 1944; War, Liberation and Chaos. He regularly lectures at universities and other institutions on both sides of the Atlantic.
